SUMMARY:Irish Road Bowling on Rugby Parkway
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a FREE outdoor participant/spectator game of Irish Road Bowling right in the middle of Rugby on slightly traveled Rugby Parkway. Teams form as the game starts\, depending on who is there. All ages! Takes about one hour on the route used.  Play or just watch as the game proceeds west\, then east. We yell “CAR” to clear the pavement if one approaches. Starting point is the Historic Rugby Print Shop\, or near it. This involves tossing an iron ball down the road\, with the team making it back to the finish (also start) in the fewest throws being declared that day’s CHAMPIONS and getting their picture on Historic Rugby’s Facebook page! A sooty trophy (survived Harrow Road Cafe fire in 2020) is held in the photo — and much fun is experienced by all. (Visit YouTube to see how it’s played in Ireland. We don’t bet on the outcome like they do. Our teams are very amateur/impromptu!) START TIME FOR TEAM PICKS IS 6 p.m. EASTERN\, or 5 Central for those coming across the nearby bridge from Fentress County. [Note 2 exceptions: June 22 starts at 5 p.m. EDT\, and Sept. 8 is the only Sunday date]

SUMMARY:"Clocks Are Like Angels" play
DESCRIPTION:Murfreesboro Little Theatre proudly presents Tennessee playwright\, Kyle R. Thomas’s\, “Clocks Are Like Angels.” This FREE ADMISSION play takes place in a small town in East Tennessee in 1933\, when the TVA began dam construction and started buying up land and displacing families. The story opens with a family burying their fifth baby\, and later they find out that they must rebury their dead as part of their forced move\, which is just unthinkable. As the stakes intensify\, they must grapple with the idea if life is still worth living at all. Twists and turns and betrayals ensue\, leading to a tragic ending. The play debuted on June 8 at the Rogue Theater Festival in NYC\, marking Tennessee playwright Kyle R. Thomas’s third NYC performance since 2022. MLT is delighted to announce that “Clocks Are Like Angels” has won the Best New Play award from Playwrights First\, earning it a professional staged reading later this year in front of Broadway producers in NYC. In collaboration with Historic Rugby\, Murfreesboro Little Theatre will present Clocks Are Like Angels by local playwright Kyle R. Thomas\, at the Rebecca Johnson Theatre on July 20. A reception with the playwright will follow the performance. While admission is free\, donations will be accepted to support Historic Rugby’s ongoing mission to provide a venue for community arts.

SUMMARY:Cemetery Lantern Tour Sept. 20
DESCRIPTION:Once a year this event shares more of Rugby’s true stories about real people of the past than any other. Hear in their own words from letters\, diaries & other accounts what brought 10 settlers to Rugby and what their ultimate fate was. Some met tragic ends. Others had long\, interesting lives. All are buried in Rugby’s Laurel Dale Cemetery\, site of the event (except in 2023 when a thunderstorm forced a move into our theatre). Because it’s sacred ground\, we limit participants to 40 — and it always sells out\, so watch here for a ticket link when one is added. IN THE EVENT OF RAIN\, PLEASE GO TO THE VISITOR CENTRE’S REBECCA JOHNSON THEATRE. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Storytelling/music/poetry event\, FREE
DESCRIPTION:The Bloom Stage\, in collaboration with Poetry in the Boro\, is thrilled to announce its inaugural event at Historic Rugby’s Rebecca Johnson Theatre on September 21\, 2024. Titled “Diptychs\, Doubletakes\, and Doppelgangers: The Power of Two in Our Stories\,” this live\, multi-genre show promises an evening of storytelling\, poetry\, live music\, and art. \nThe show starts at 7:00 PM Eastern Time\, and will explore the dualities inherent in human experience—love and hate\, past and present\, light and dark\, and many more. From sweet and sour to his and hers\, the program invites audiences to delve into the richness of these contrasts and comparisons through the creative expressions of established and emerging artists. “As a part time resident in Rugby\, I am beyond excited to bring this show to my home village\, celebrating the diverse narratives that unite us\,” said Kara Kemp\, founder and co-producer of the Bloom Stage. “This collaboration with Poetry in the Boro underscores our commitment to fostering community through art.” \nThe show will be hosted at Historic Rugby’s Rebecca Johnson Theatre\, located at 1331 Rugby Parkway\, Rugby\, TN\, inside the Visitor Centre. Following the performance\, attendees are invited to enjoy libations and light refreshments\, continuing the evening’s celebration of artistic expression. Admission to the event is free\, thanks to a generous grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and Historic Rugby. Donations are encouraged to support Historic Rugby’s preservation efforts. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. “Participating in the arts–whether as an audience member or as a performer–nurtures our human connection\,” said Kory Wells\, founder of Poetry in the Boro. “The creative initiatives that Kara and I direct have been serving and building communities in Murfreesboro since 2016. We’re grateful and delighted that the support of the Tennessee Arts Commission and Historic Rugby is allowing us to expand our creative circle beyond middle Tennessee and onto the Cumberland Plateau.
