SUMMARY:Kellogg's Loop Trail Work Days
DESCRIPTION:Rugby State Natural Area friends and trail volunteers:\n \nTravis Bow\, our stewardship ecologist for the newly created Upper Cumberland District of State Natural Areas\, has been rerouting sections of Kellogg’s Loop in preparation for rebuilding Little Creek Bridge. There are opportunities for volunteer work in trail clearing\, invasive plant removal\, applying paint blazes to mark the trail\, and clearing the way to the bridge construction site. Hours of volunteer labor will count as in-kind matching for the Little Creek Bridge reconstruction grant. \nTravis is scheduling winter trail work days:  Saturday\, February 1; Saturday February 15. We’ll meet 10 a.m. Eastern at the Rugby Visitor Centre and proceed from there to the project site. REGISTER for Feb. 1 & LEARN MORE HERE. REGISTER for Feb. 15 HERE. Please mark these 2 dates on your 2025 calendars\, watch for more information on the websites\, and plan to help on one or more of these work days if you can.  Travis has a trail-clearing machine\, so volunteer efforts would likely include a bit of raking and light clearing after the machine has done its cuts. Bring gloves & work clothes & pack a light lunch. Tools will be provided.\n\nThe bridge grant still requires a match of at least $30\,000 in real dollars. We’ve raised just about $23\,000 to this point\, so please consider making a year-end monetary contribution to Historic Rugby designated for Bridge Replacement. SUMMARY:Third Saturday Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Rugby State Natural Area for a free guided hike each month on the third Saturday. Spring is a great time to go hiking as tree leafage and wildflowers emerge! NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED. This one time we’ll take an unofficial but historic trail following a bluff above the Clear Fork River dotted with towering hemlocks and evergreen rhododendron bushes above the stream. BUT we’ll meet 10 a.m. at historic Uffington House\, 1728 Rugby Parkway\, not the Visitor Centre. Come early and leave a car at Laurel Dale Cemetery if you want to save some later steps as that’s where the hike will end. Then walk back along the winding road to Uffington House by 10. \nThese free guided hikes are scheduled for the third Saturday of each month and normally start from the Historic Rugby Visitor Centre Porch (1331 Rugby Parkway\, Rugby\, Tennessee 37733) at 10 a.m. (Eastern Time). Leaders will be either local\, from Friends of the Rugby State Natural Area\, or from the state Department of Conservation. (No hikes are planned for June\, July or August on account of expected hot weather.) Leader for the April 19 wildflower hike will be Benita Howell. Leader for the May 17 hike will be Travis Bow\, Stewardship Ecologist for the state Division of Natural Areas. Bring a daypack\, water and snacks to eat on the trail. These are is a 2-4 mile\, moderate but family-friendly hikes. Dogs on leash are welcome. Early autumn is a great time to hike as temperatures moderate.  NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED.  This hike will feature the return of Jalen Prather (pictured\, at left in photo & below) as a knowledgeable leader who has proven he can show us things we often overlook. Jalen is a fungi whiz\, so we’ll be looking for mushrooms to identify\, among many other features of nature. \nThese free guided hikes are scheduled for the third Saturday of each month and start from the Historic Rugby Visitor Centre Porch (1331 Rugby Parkway\, Rugby\, Tennessee 37733) at 10 a.m. (Eastern Time). Leaders will be either local\, from Friends of the Rugby State Natural Area\, or from the state Department of Conservation. SUMMARY:Irish Road Bowling on Rugby Parkway
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a FREE outdoor participant/spectator game of Irish Road Bowling right in the middle of Rugby on slightly traveled Rugby Parkway. Teams form as the game starts\, depending on who is there. All ages! Takes about one hour on the route used.  Play or just watch as the game proceeds west\, then east. We yell “CAR” to clear the pavement if one approaches. Starting point is the Historic Rugby Print Shop\, or near it. This involves tossing an iron ball down the road\, with the team making it back to the finish (also start) in the fewest throws being declared that day’s CHAMPIONS and getting their picture on Historic Rugby’s Facebook page! A sooty trophy (survived Harrow Road Cafe fire in 2020) is held in the photo — and much fun is experienced by all. (Visit YouTube to see how it’s played in Ireland. We don’t bet on the outcome like they do. Our teams are very amateur/impromptu!) START TIME FOR TEAM PICKS IS 6 p.m. EASTERN\, or 5 Central for those coming across the nearby bridge from Fentress County.

SUMMARY:Christmas at Rugby & Holiday Dinner
DESCRIPTION:On the first two Saturdays in December\, the historic settlement of Rugby\, Tennessee\, will come alive with Christmas spirit and celebrate the holidays as if it were still 1880\, the year the town was settled. \nThe living Victorian-era village will bustle with caroling\, holiday shopping and much more. Highlights of the Victorian Christmas celebration include holiday music\, horse-drawn carriage rides\, hot drinks and cookies in the decorated historic buildings\, tours of five private homes\, a visit from Father Christmas and the sounds of carolers performing throughout the village. Look for a performance by the Rugby Cornet Band! A Christmas Tree Lighting is also held at 5:30 p.m. Eastern at the gazebo. \nChristmas at Rugby tour ticket information & online purchase ticket link is now HERE. (Please note the Dec. 13 dinner is Sold Out. If you have reservations we will welcome you at 6 p.m. Eastern at Hester Hall. Food trucks will also be available this date as well as beer & hot chocolate\, both at the Harrow Road Public House.) \n In addition\, Christ Church Episcopal will present a seasonal worship service of Lessons & Carols at with an emphasis on music both Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. EST (3:30 Central) in the 1887 church. \nEvent festivities run from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Eastern. SUMMARY:Mike McGill's Christmas Spectacular
DESCRIPTION:Mike McGill returns to the Johnson Theatre stage in the Rugby Visitor Centre on December 13 at 8 pm Eastern. This is a free event that is open to the public with requested donations to Historic Rugby at the door. All are welcome – just give what you can. In addition to the man himself and his amazing backing band of some of Knoxville’s finest musicians\, this year’s guest list includes musical greats Tricia Gene Brady and Barrett Birchem. \nMike McGill has been a full-time singer/songwriter and musician for the past 26 years. He has performed in 28 states and 6 different countries. He’s a founding member of the classic country band The Drunk Uncles\, the honky tonk band Barstool Romeos\, lead singer & electric guitar player for The Cat House Prophets\, and now fronts his own project\, Mike McGill and The Refills. He has shared bills with noteworthy acts such as J.D. Crowe and the New South\, Doyle Lawson\, Junior Brown\, Ray Wylie Hubbard\, Southern Culture on the Skids\, Corb Lund\, The Kentucky Headhunters\, BlackBerry Smoke\, Shooter Jennings\, John Anderson\, Marty Stuart\, Chris Stapleton & Sturgill Simpson. He also hosts a weekly podcast with co-host Jamie Akins called “One More for the Good Guys”. \nHistoric Rugby is a heritage treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. It has been open to the public since 1966 as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 site and is recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. We’ll meet at 9 a.m. Eastern (8 Central) at the Historic Rugby Visitor Centre and carpool from there to the trail.
