See everything from MGs to Rolls Royces\, Minis\, Morrises and lots in between. Got a British car or motorbike? You can enter it – register HERE. A silent auction of car-related and many other items caps off the day\, as well as a drawing for cash! Look for a food truck or two as well. \nALSO the same day will be a Tea Table Setting Contest in Rugby’s historic 1880s Uffington House. It’s the 8th year for this! Bring your unique ideas for the theme of Open Creativity! Setup will be Aug. 16\, and the contest itself will be Aug. 17 from 9-1:30 Eastern Time (8-12:30 Central). DESCRIPTION:Once a year this event shares more of Rugby’s true stories about real people of the past than any other. Hear in their own words from letters\, diaries & other accounts what brought 10 settlers to Rugby and what their ultimate fate was. Some met tragic ends. Others had long\, interesting lives. All are buried in Rugby’s Laurel Dale Cemetery\, site of the event (except in 2023 when a thunderstorm forced a move into our theatre). Because it’s sacred ground\, we limit participants to 40 — and it always sells out\, so watch here for a ticket link when one is added. DESCRIPTION:The Bloom Stage\, in collaboration with Poetry in the Boro\, is thrilled to announce its inaugural event at Historic Rugby’s Rebecca Johnson Theatre on September 21\, 2024. Titled “Diptychs\, Doubletakes\, and Doppelgangers: The Power of Two in Our Stories\,” this live\, multi-genre show promises an evening of storytelling\, poetry\, live music\, and art. \nThe show starts at 7:00 PM Eastern Time\, and will explore the dualities inherent in human experience—love and hate\, past and present\, light and dark\, and many more. From sweet and sour to his and hers\, the program invites audiences to delve into the richness of these contrasts and comparisons through the creative expressions of established and emerging artists. “As a part time resident in Rugby\, I am beyond excited to bring this show to my home village\, celebrating the diverse narratives that unite us\,” said Kara Kemp\, founder and co-producer of the Bloom Stage. “This collaboration with Poetry in the Boro underscores our commitment to fostering community through art.” \nThe show will be hosted at Historic Rugby’s Rebecca Johnson Theatre\, located at 1331 Rugby Parkway\, Rugby\, TN\, inside the Visitor Centre. Following the performance\, attendees are invited to enjoy libations and light refreshments\, continuing the evening’s celebration of artistic expression. Admission to the event is free\, thanks to a generous grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and Historic Rugby. Donations are encouraged to support Historic Rugby’s preservation efforts. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. “Participating in the arts–whether as an audience member or as a performer–nurtures our human connection\,” said Kory Wells\, founder of Poetry in the Boro. “The creative initiatives that Kara and I direct have been serving and building communities in Murfreesboro since 2016. We’re grateful and delighted that the support of the Tennessee Arts Commission and Historic Rugby is allowing us to expand our creative circle beyond middle Tennessee and onto the Cumberland Plateau.

SUMMARY:Third Saturday Hike with Jack & Jalen
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Rugby State Natural Area for a free guided hike each month on the third Saturday. October is a great time to hike with leaf colors starting to change. NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED. This hike will feature the return of Jack Gugino & Jalen Prather as knowledgeable leaders who have proven they can show us things we often overlook. Jalen is a fungi whiz\, so we’ll be looking for mushrooms to identify\, among many other things. \nThese free guided hikes are scheduled for the third Saturday of each month and start from the Historic Rugby Visitor Centre Porch (1331 Rugby Parkway\, Rugby\, Tennessee 37733) at 10 a.m. (Eastern Time). Leaders will be either local\, from Friends of the Rugby State Natural Area\, or from the state Department of Conservation. (No hikes are held in June\, July or August on account of expected hot weather.) \nBring a daypack\, water and snacks to eat on the trail. These are is a 2-4 mile\, moderate but family-friendly hikes. Dogs on leash are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Mike McGill returns to the Johnson Theatre stage in the Rugby Visitor Centre on December 7 and 14 at 8 pm Eastern. This is a free event that is open to the public with requested donations to Historic Rugby at the door. All are welcome – just give what you can. In addition to the man himself\, this year’s guest list includes Knoxville (and Rugby) legend Jodie Manross\, as well as an amazing backing band of some of Knoxville’s finest musicians. \nMike McGill has been a full-time singer/songwriter and musician for the past 25 years. He has performed in 28 states and 6 different countries. He’s a founding member of the classic country band The Drunk Uncles\, the honky tonk band Barstool Romeos\, lead singer & electric guitar player for The Cat House Prophets\, and now fronts his own project\, Mike McGill and The Refills. He has shared bills with noteworthy acts such as J.D. Crowe and the New South\, Doyle Lawson\, Junior Brown\, Ray Wylie Hubbard\, Southern Culture on the Skids\, Corb Lund\, The Kentucky Headhunters\, BlackBerry Smoke\, Shooter Jennings\, John Anderson\, Marty Stuart\, Chris Stapleton & Sturgill Simpson. He also hosts a weekly podcast with co-host Jamie Akins called “One More for the Good Guys”. \nHistoric Rugby is a heritage treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. Now\, we’re thrilled to bring him to the feature stage FOR THIS EVENT.  Whether you’ve heard him before or this is your first time experiencing his work\, Bobby has a way of weaving poetry and storytelling that lingers—the kind that settles into your bones\, invites you to pause\, and reminds you why words matter. His artistic roots go back to grade school and a couple of special East Tennessee teachers. The cultural influences of the Mountain South\, refracted by moonshine madness and Holy Ghost fire\, fueled his need to express himself\, which he has done in chart topping songs\, piles of poetry\, and in dozens of theatrical productions including shows at the Lamb’s Theater in New York City and the Ryman Auditorium. \n\nCome be still\, listen\, and let the stories unfold.\n\nThe event\, themed around water\, movement and wintering\, draws inspiration from the frozen hush of winter\, the comfort of a crackling fireside and the refreshment of a forest brook.

SUMMARY:Third Saturday Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Rugby State Natural Area for a free guided hike each month on the third Saturday. Spring is a great time to go hiking as tree leafage and wildflowers emerge! NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED. This one time we’ll take an unofficial but historic trail following a bluff above the Clear Fork River dotted with towering hemlocks and evergreen rhododendron bushes above the stream. BUT we’ll meet 10 a.m. at historic Uffington House\, 1728 Rugby Parkway\, not the Visitor Centre. Come early and leave a car at Laurel Dale Cemetery if you want to save some later steps as that’s where the hike will end. Then walk back along the winding road to Uffington House by 10. \nThese free guided hikes are scheduled for the third Saturday of each month and normally start from the Historic Rugby Visitor Centre Porch (1331 Rugby Parkway\, Rugby\, Tennessee 37733) at 10 a.m. (Eastern Time). Leaders will be either local\, from Friends of the Rugby State Natural Area\, or from the state Department of Conservation. (No hikes are planned for June\, July or August on account of expected hot weather.) Leader for the April 19 wildflower hike will be Benita Howell. Leader for the May 17 hike will be Travis Bow\, Stewardship Ecologist for the state Division of Natural Areas. Bring a daypack\, water and snacks to eat on the trail. These are is a 2-4 mile\, moderate but family-friendly hikes. Dogs on leash are welcome. Wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather. \nAfter the hike\, take some time to stroll around the historic town site.
