SUMMARY:Kellogg's Loop Trail Work Day (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:Rugby State Natural Area friends and trail volunteers: The work for this date (Jan. 4) has now been cancelled because of predicted bone-chilling weather.\n \nTravis Bow\, our stewardship ecologist for the newly created Upper Cumberland District of State Natural Areas\, has been rerouting sections of Kellogg’s Loop in preparation for rebuilding Little Creek Bridge. There are opportunities for volunteer work in trail clearing\, invasive plant removal\, applying paint blazes to mark the trail\, and clearing the way to the bridge construction site. Hours of volunteer labor will count as in-kind matching for the Little Creek Bridge reconstruction grant. \nTravis is scheduling four winter trail work days: Saturday\, January 4; Saturday\, January 18; Saturday\, February 1; Saturday February 15. We’ll meet 10 a.m. Eastern at the Rugby Visitor Centre and proceed from there to the project site. He will publicize these on the TDEC website soon. Please mark these dates on your 2025 calendars\, watch for more information on the websites\, and plan to help on one or more of these work days if you can.  Travis has a trail-clearing machine\, so volunteer efforts would likely include a bit of raking and light clearing after the machine has done its cuts.\n\nThe bridge grant still requires a match of at least $30\,000 in real dollars. We’ve raised just about $23\,000 to this point\, so please consider making a year-end monetary contribution to Historic Rugby designated for Bridge Replacement. That would be a great memorial tribute to Eric Wilson and Bob Hemminger\, who first showed Beacon Hill newcomers the Crack and aspired to make it more accessible via Cox Branch Trail and the old wooden bridge. \nThanks very much\,  Benita Howell\n(Photo is the old bridge after it washed downstream in 2021 flooding)

SUMMARY:"still\," Bloom Stage show w/Bobby Taylor
DESCRIPTION:This multi-genre art show explores the interplay between stillness\, movement\, flow and stagnation: the transitions that define our seasons of life. From the quiet introspection of winter — literal or metaphorical — to the moments when we emerge and move forward\, this show invites reflection on the rhythms of time\, change and transformation.  FREE with suggested $10 donations accepted at the door or by clicking HERE for nonprofit Historic Rugby\, Inc. \nJUST ANNOUNCED: A legend on so many levels\, Bobby Taylor has been a beloved presence at Poetry in the Boro\, gracing our open mic with his words\, wisdom\, and signature style. Now\, we’re thrilled to bring him to the feature stage FOR THIS EVENT.  Whether you’ve heard him before or this is your first time experiencing his work\, Bobby has a way of weaving poetry and storytelling that lingers—the kind that settles into your bones\, invites you to pause\, and reminds you why words matter. His artistic roots go back to grade school and a couple of special East Tennessee teachers. The cultural influences of the Mountain South\, refracted by moonshine madness and Holy Ghost fire\, fueled his need to express himself\, which he has done in chart topping songs\, piles of poetry\, and in dozens of theatrical productions including shows at the Lamb’s Theater in New York City and the Ryman Auditorium. \n\nCome be still\, listen\, and let the stories unfold.\n\nThe event\, themed around water\, movement and wintering\, draws inspiration from the frozen hush of winter\, the comfort of a crackling fireside and the refreshment of a forest brook.

SUMMARY:Third Saturday Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Rugby State Natural Area for a free guided hike each month on the third Saturday. Spring is a great time to go hiking as tree leafage and wildflowers emerge! NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED. This one time we’ll take an unofficial but historic trail following a bluff above the Clear Fork River dotted with towering hemlocks and evergreen rhododendron bushes above the stream. BUT we’ll meet 10 a.m. at historic Uffington House\, 1728 Rugby Parkway\, not the Visitor Centre. Come early and leave a car at Laurel Dale Cemetery if you want to save some later steps as that’s where the hike will end. Then walk back along the winding road to Uffington House by 10. \nThese free guided hikes are scheduled for the third Saturday of each month and normally start from the Historic Rugby Visitor Centre Porch (1331 Rugby Parkway\, Rugby\, Tennessee 37733) at 10 a.m. (Eastern Time). SUMMARY:Kellogg's Loop Trail Work on National Trails Day
DESCRIPTION:Rugby State Natural Area friends and trail volunteers\, this date June 7 marks National Trails Day. In observance\, we’ll have a work day to improve the Kellogg’s Loop Trail. \n\nTravis Bow\, our stewardship ecologist for the newly created Upper Cumberland District of State Natural Areas\, has been rerouting sections of Kellogg’s Loop in preparation for rebuilding Little Creek Bridge. There are opportunities for volunteer work in trail clearing\, invasive plant removal\, applying paint blazes to mark the trail\, and clearing the way to the bridge construction site. Hours of volunteer labor will count as in-kind matching for the Little Creek Bridge reconstruction grant. \nNO NEED to register for this. We’ll meet 9 a.m. Eastern at the Rugby Visitor Centre and carpool from there to the project site. We’ll finish by Noon to allow anyone who wishes to attend Historic Rugby’s Annual Meeting at 1 p.m. Watch for any changes (like a rain-out) on the website\, and plan to help if you can.  Travis has a trail-clearing machine\, so volunteer efforts would likely include a bit more raking and light clearing in the path of the completed machine cuts. Bring gloves & work clothes\, wear boots if possible & pack a light lunch\, water and bug spray. Tools will be provided.\n\nThe bridge grant still requires a match of at least $30\,000 in real dollars. We’ve raised at least$23\,000 to this point\, so please consider making a monetary donation to Historic Rugby designated for Bridge Replacement.

DESCRIPTION:There’s something magical about Historic Rugby—a village frozen in time\, where cobblestone paths lead to 19th-century charm\, and the air feels just a little lighter under the canopy of Appalachian trees. \nNow imagine stepping into that magic for an elegant Afternoon Tea in Rugby with WCTE PBS\, based in Cookeville\, TN. \nWCTE invites you to join them in the historic halls of Rugby for a delightful and meaningful experience: a classic English tea served in one of Tennessee’s most treasured settings—all for badly needed support of local public media. \nThis special event is a fundraiser for WCTE PBS\, your nonprofit public television station dedicated to serving the Upper Cumberland for 48 years. Every dollar raised supports: Educational programming for all ages\, Early learning and literacy initiatives\, Public safety alerts and emergency communication & Local storytelling that celebrates our unique region. \nThanks to the generosity of Sue Bell\, and the gracious donation of Hester Hall by nonprofit Historic Rugby\, Inc.\, 100% of the proceeds will go directly to support WCTE PBS’s mission. Tickets are $50 with additional options for a 6-person table or a VIP ticket. The ticket link is HERE. \nMake a day & night of it in Rugby: after the tea on the same day\, stay for Irish Road Bowling at 6 p.m. Eastern\, or a Bloom Stage presentation in the Visitor Centre at 7 p.m. Eastern. Then reserve a night’s lodging\, too!

SUMMARY:Bloom Stage: SAVOR Storytelling Show
DESCRIPTION:The Bloom Stage and Poetry in the Boro Return Multi-Genre Storytelling Show to Historic Rugby \nThe Bloom Stage\, in collaboration with Friendly City Books\, is delighted to announce a special edition of its traveling\, multi-genre storytelling show in Historic Rugby\, TN. On Saturday\, September 13\, audiences are invited to gather at the Rebecca Johnson Theatre for Savor\, an evening inspired by the Friendly City Books anthology Savor: Poems for the Tongue. To reserve a seat\, please click HERE. See a lineup of performers on the poster BELOW. \nHistoric Rugby is thrilled to present this special show\, made possible through the generous support of a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. This expanded collaboration will feature select poets from the anthology sharing their work live on stage. Friendly City Books\, based in Columbus\, MS\, will be on hand with copies of the anthology available for purchase. The performance begins at 7:00 PM Eastern Time (doors open at 6:30 PM). \nThemed around the sensory joy of taste\, language\, and shared experience\, Savor invites audiences to relish not only the spoken word\, but the rich connections between story\, poetry\, music\, and community. \n“Almost every one of my favorite memories is made around food or the table—so this theme feels like a natural pairing for our stage\,” said Kara Kemp\, founder and co-producer of the Bloom Stage. “And it’s made even sweeter by bringing in some of my favorite artists and friends. Savor is a chance to slow down\, to taste every moment\, and to share in the beauty of words that linger like a good meal.” \n“When Friendly City Books published Savor: Poems for the Tongue\, they served up a delicious intersection of literature and sensory memory\,” said Kory Wells\, co-producer of the Bloom Stage and founder of Poetry in the Boro. “I’m delighted to have work included in the anthology and even more delighted to expand the reach of this book and theme through this show.” \nThe evening’s program will bring together an irresistible mix of artistry and conversation. Contributing poets from Savor: Poems for the Tongue will share their work alongside musical performances by Kibbs McWilliams and thematic pieces from Knoxville legend Amy Hubbard and Murfreesboro’s own Laura Schlesinger. Renowned Livingston\, TN\, visual artist Mitchell White will join Dr. Luke Anderson for a conversation that will consider how we can artistically savor even unsavory moments in place and time. Guests will have the chance to meet the artists\, connect with fellow audience members\, and purchase signed copies of the anthology. \nIn addition to curated performances\, a few open mic slots will be available during the event for poems or stories related to the theme. Interested participants are encouraged to inquire about a 4-minute slot by emailing poetryintheboro@gmail.com. \nThe event will take place at Historic Rugby’s Rebecca Johnson Theatre\, 1331 Rugby Parkway\, Rugby\, TN\, inside the Visitor Centre. Following the show\, guests are invited to enjoy light refreshments and conversation in the theatre lobby. \nAdmission is free\, with suggested $10 donation at the door encouraged to support Historic Rugby’s preservation and arts programming. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. To reserve a seat\, please click HERE. \nThe organizers invite you to join in celebrating the power of art to connect and inspire!
