SUMMARY:Irish Road Bowling on Rugby Pkwy. (July 29 cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:(The bowl for July 29 has been cancelled on account of high temperature.) Enjoy a FREE outdoor participant/spectator game of Irish Road Bowling right in the middle of Rugby on slightly traveled Rugby Parkway. Teams form as the game starts\, depending on who is there. All ages! Takes about one hour on the route used.  Play or just watch as the game proceeds west\, then east. We yell “CAR” to clear the pavement if one approaches. Starting point is the Historic Rugby Print Shop\, or near it. This involves tossing an iron ball down the road\, with the team making it back to the finish (also start) in the fewest throws being declared that day’s CHAMPIONS and getting their picture on Historic Rugby’s Facebook page! A sooty trophy (survived Harrow Road Cafe fire in 2020) is held in the photo — and much fun experienced by all. (Visit YouTube to see how it’s played in Ireland. We don’t bet on the outcome like they do. Our teams are very amateur/impromptu!) START TIME FOR TEAM PICKS IS 6 p.m. EASTERN\, or 5 Central for those coming across the nearby bridge from Fentress County.

SUMMARY:British Festival
DESCRIPTION:British Festival has become an annual May event for Historic Rugby. Look for vendors\, a new food provider\, tours of the historic buildings and more. Bring the family for a celebration in this British-founded 1880 village! See the schedule and an event site map below. \nWe will have walk-up and join Cricket Games! We are thrilled to welcome back American Cricket player\, author\, and leading authority on the history of American Cricket\, Tom Melville. Guests will be delighted with this British sport. \n\nWith this activity\, festival guests have a chance to actually play short\, informal\, cricket games just as they were played 100-200 years ago. As the national sport of Britain\, cricket had been very much a part of the life of the early English settlers at Rugby. Thomas Hughes himself was a cricket lover. Maps show a cricket ground had actually been planned for the Rugby settlement.\n\n\nThis activity is something the entire family can enjoy!\n\nAlso both days a special treat will be concerts by the revived Rugby Cornet Band. This locally formed group has been practicing hard and will recreate some of the music heard by the original band in Rugby in the 1880s. Other musical acts will be Granville Automatic\, Sunstreet\, Glade Dixieland Band\, Mt. LeConte Jug Band\, Junction South\, Greg Horne\, Wildwood Flutes\, Jodie Manross & Russell Tanenbaum. Some of it will be Music for Children!\nBoth days local artisans will feature & sell their arts and crafts of all descriptions in the Rugby Commissary\, Spirit of Red Hill\, The Gallery at Historic Rugby and other locations. The beloved Maypole will also be back both days in front of the Schoolhouse\, with Lark in the Morn Country Dancers instructing young and old (see below).\nA Kids Area will have badminton\, cornhole\, croquet and other games.\nFood will be available from the NEWLY OPENED Canteen next to the Print Shop. Tours will be offered of Rugby’s historic buildings\, including 1884 Kingstone Lisle\, 1882 Hughes Library\, 1887 Christ Church Episcopal\, 1907 Schoolhouse\, and the 1887 Rugby Printing Works — where you will be able to have your own notecards or writing paper monogramed with initials or name while you wait for only $7.50 for 50 sheets on our antique press.\nThis year’s free event is sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission\, Spirit of Red Hill Nature Arts & Oddiments and Glen & Carmita Wright.\n\n \n\n\nMaypole 2022 \nRugby maypole 1928

SUMMARY:Ghostly Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rugby presents Ghostly Gathering on two Saturdays\, October 22 and 29\, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Eastern. This yearly Halloween-season celebration frequently sells out\, and did last year. It is a favorite among village visitors\, who enjoy a homemade chili dinner with dessert\, followed by oil lamp tours of several historic buildings featuring the “Rugby Edged in Black” exhibit. If you missed this in the past or want to see what’s changed\, now is your chance! \nDuring the tour\, guests meet the “ghosts” of some of Rugby’s earliest residents and hear their stories. Edged in Black offers a look at the death and mourning customs of the Victorian era through the death of Margaret Hughes on October 5\, 1887.  Hear funeral hymns and Appalachian dirges while residents mourn her passing. The event concludes with a storyteller spinning more spooky stories in the crisp fall air. \nFor TICKETS ($15 students\, $25 adults) a link will be posted here soon. For questions\, please call 423-628-2441 Ext. 1 Wednesdays through Sundays. \nThis event is supported in part by a generous grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

It usually takes about an hour\, depending on how many participants show up. We call it off for lightning but have been known to continue in Irish drizzle. \nEVENT STARTS 5 p.m. Eastern AT PRINT SHOP & ends nearby. [Bowls Nov. 26\, Dec. 4 & Dec. 17 will also start at 5 p.m. EST given the shorter days.]

SUMMARY:Cemetery Lantern Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Lantern Tour in Rugby’s Laurel Dale Cemetery allows you to meet 9 or 10 former Rugby residents who tell their stories\, all true. The accounts come from letters\, diaries and other materials in the Historic Rugby Archives. A small group of local singers help set the mood. \nThe Lantern Tour marks its 13th year in 2022. Attendance is always limited to 40 on account of the setting on sacred ground\, and frequently sells out. Reserve early to avoid disappointment\, please.  (The characters change a bit from year to year\, so even if you’ve attended the event previously you’re likely to see something new.) The tour is held outdoors in the cemetery\, a special setting that requires some moderate walking. \nBrought to you courtesy of nonprofit Historic Rugby. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 12 and younger. A ticket purchase link is HERE. Please call for other information\, 423-628-2441 Ext. 1\, Wednesdays through Sundays.
