SUMMARY:Founders’ Day Celebration & Michaelmas Tea
DESCRIPTION:Help celebrate 15 decades + since Rugby’s founding on the Cumberland Plateau in 1880\, our 142nd Anniversary. ALSO this year will mark to the month the 200th anniversary of our founder Thomas Hughes’ birth\, Oct. 20\,1822! A special program will be included. \nHours are 10-5 EDT (9-4 Central). FREE. Take time to and enjoy arts\, crafts\, food\, and music (at the Gazebo) while exploring this lovely Victorian Village.  Local artists and crafters will be here demonstrating their skills with the results of their talent available for purchase.  We look forward to seeing you! Questions? Call us at 423-628-2441 Ext. 1 Wednesdays through Sundays. \nThis event is funded in part by a grant from the TN Arts Commission. \nThe same day\, Rugby’s Christ Church Episcopal is holding its annual Michaelmas Tea\, with seatings at Noon & 2 Eastern (11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Central time) at the Friendly House just behind the church. SUMMARY:Irish Road Bowling
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJoin in this fun game of Irish Road Bowling or just watch as players divide up into teams and roll and iron ball down Rugby Parkway (now safer with little traffic). The team with the fewest throws from start to finish wins! Their photo is taken with our trophy and posted on the Historic Rugby Facebook page! All ages and skill levels (or lack thereof) welcomed. Starts 5 p.m. EASTERN/4 C. in heart of Rugby. (Hours moved up for end of DST.) \nWe have spotters to retrieve balls (with magnets on poles) that might on occasion stray off the pavement. Everyone yells “CAR” when a vehicle is seen\, so the road can be cleared for unknowing motorists. Great group entertainment! \nThe game started in Ireland\, but has now spread to Boston and other points in the USA. Rugby now marks several years of playing. It usually takes about an hour\, depending on how many participants show up. We call it off for lightning but have been known to continue in Irish drizzle. \nEVENT STARTS 5 p.m. Eastern AT PRINT SHOP & ends nearby. [Bowls Nov. 26\, Dec. 4 & Dec. 17 will also start at 5 p.m. EST given the shorter days.]

SUMMARY:Ghostly Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Historic Rugby presents Ghostly Gathering on two Saturdays\, October 22 and 29\, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Eastern. This yearly Halloween-season celebration frequently sells out\, and did last year. It is a favorite among village visitors\, who enjoy a homemade chili dinner with dessert\, followed by oil lamp tours of several historic buildings featuring the “Rugby Edged in Black” exhibit. If you missed this in the past or want to see what’s changed\, now is your chance! \nDuring the tour\, guests meet the “ghosts” of some of Rugby’s earliest residents and hear their stories. Edged in Black offers a look at the death and mourning customs of the Victorian era through the death of Margaret Hughes on October 5\, 1887.  Hear funeral hymns and Appalachian dirges while residents mourn her passing. The event concludes with a storyteller spinning more spooky stories in the crisp fall air. \nFor TICKETS ($15 students\, $25 adults) a link will be posted here soon. For questions\, please call 423-628-2441 Ext. 1 Wednesdays through Sundays. \nThis event is supported in part by a generous grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.
